Now that I think about it, simultaneously believing “white people engaging in POC culture is cultural appropriation” and “white people have no culture” kind of leads you to a total dead end, doesn’t it.
So cool! Apis dorsata - Rock bee/Giant Honeybee. They do this "shimmering" response to ward off predators. I thought this article testing different object size thresholds to trigger the response was really interesting.
The thing I lie about the most often in casual conversation is claiming something happenned three times when it only happenned twice. Two times is enough to notice a pattern and want to remark upon it, but not enough to convince anyone or to make for a good story. But three times feels like it is.
So any time I say something’s happenned three times, chances are it’s only happenned twice.
Za'atar is extremely delicious, and my wife, as the more Middle-Eastern person of the two of us, is the one that makes za'atar for breakfast. The problem is, with my schedule being all over the map on weekdays, we don’t actually get up at the same time so don’t have breakfast together. So, we’re limited to having it one of the days of the weekend.
Or, as I like to call it, Za'aterdag.
Our ornithologist friend got us a “birding for babies” book, and usually I try to translate on the fly, but this book was an unexpectedly big failure for that. Like I see “chickadee” and say “синица” but that particular chickadee turns out to be “черношапочная гаичка”. I see “woodpecker” and say “дятел” but that particular woodpecker turns out to be “каролинский меланерпес”. What even are all these words?
